The Sírio-Libanês Hospital in Brasília, which had already expected that doctors were evaluating the possibility of discharging Lula da Silva today, has now issued a statement to announce the news and explain that Lula “after a good clinical evolution” will continue with “outpatient rehabilitation” at his home, under the care of the doctors who operated on him.
Doctor Roberto Kalil Filho, head of the medical team responsible for the president’s treatment, assured journalists in statements that the recovery process exceeded expectations and therefore anticipated his departure.
Lula da Silva, who turns 78 this month, underwent surgery on Friday at a private hospital in Brasilia to implant a hip replacement and correct problems in the head of his femur caused by osteoarthritis that left him with permanent pain.
The doctor added that the Brazilian president took advantage of the hip surgery by undergoing plastic surgery on the eyelids of both eyes at the same time, known as blepharoplasty, which aims to remove excess skin around the eyes and which was also successful.
Lula da Silva, who took up his third term as Brazil’s head of state in January, was operated on by a team of 20 professionals, made up of doctors he trusts, who arrived in Brasilia from São Paulo on Thursday to prepare for the operation.
Speaking to the press this week, Lula da Silva said that after postponing the operation for several weeks due to several international commitments that he did not want to miss, he decided to undergo the operation because he “took care of” his health and ended up with the pain.
Once recovered, Lula will resume his international agenda with a trip planned for early November, when he will participate in the 2023 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP28), to be held in the United Arab Emirates.
