A pink diamond sold at auction in Hong Kong for $59.24 million, setting a new record for the price per carat of a diamond or gemstone, Sotheby’s said.
The 11.15-carat “Williamson Pink Star” sold for HK$453.2 million, making it the second-highest price paid for a jewel at auction, the auction house added.
The winning bid, from an undisclosed buyer in Florida, United States, was more than double the estimated sale price of $21.6 million.
The coveted item was the second largest pink diamond ever sold at auction. Pink diamonds are the rarest and most sought after gemstones in the world market.
The record for a pink diamond was set in 2017, when a stone called “CTF Pink Star” was also sold in Hong Kong for €72.9 million.
