The start of the school year in Kharkov began with classes in 60 underground rooms in metro stations to protect children going to school in times of war. Now Kharkov Mayor Ihor Terekhov wants to go further and build an underground school, the first in Ukraine.
The aim is to ensure that children can go to school safely, even as the threat of the Moscow offensive has persisted since February 2022. It should be noted that Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second largest city, has been the target of almost daily Russian bombings. .
The mayor did not specify dates for the start of construction of this bunker school, but assured that it will meet the most modern legal requirements for protective structures.
Ihor Terekhov announced the construction of this underground school through a post shared on social media, stating that this “shelter” will “enable thousands of Kharkov children to continue their education in person and safely, even during missile threats” .
The mayor of Kharkov assured that he “will continue to invest in education” despite the instability and constant threat of war, which led to children attending classes remotely or in makeshift rooms in metro stations.
“We will not reduce expenditure on education by one hryvnia this year and next year, despite the lack of budgetary resources and the rather difficult task of balancing the local budget taking into account the existing deficit,” Terekhov said.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Education, around 363 educational institutions have been destroyed and almost 3,800 damaged.
