Russia is considering abrogating the Test Ban Treaty

The lower house of Russia’s parliament will consider withdrawing Moscow’s ratification of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, Duma Speaker Viacheslav Volodin announced today.

“At the next meeting of the Council of Parliamentary Spokesmen of the State Duma, we will without fail debate the abrogation of the Total Nuclear Test Ban Treaty,” Volodin announced through a text he distributed today via the social network Telegram.

The Duma president also stated that the issue “concerns Russia’s national interests and will be a response to the United States, which has not ratified the treaty so far.”

‘The situation in the world has changed. Washington and Brussels [União Europeia] They started a war against our country. Today’s challenges require new decisions,” he threatened.

Volodin added that Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday acknowledged the possibility of withdrawing ratification of the treaty.

The Russian head of state recalled that the Soviet Union and the United States signed the treaty in 1966, which was ratified only by Moscow.

“This is a question for the Duma deputies. Theoretically you can revoke ratification. If we do that, it will be enough,” Putin said on Thursday.
