European operation finds thousands of terrorism-related content on TikTok

More than 2,000 publications related to terrorism and violent extremism were reported to the TikTok platform as part of a European operation to refer and remove online content in which the Portuguese Judicial Police (PJ) took part.

According to the European Union Police Cooperation Agency, known as Europol, the operation identified around 2,145 pieces of content, including elements related to “jihadism”, violent right-wing extremism and terrorism, such as videos and memes, which were referenced. TikTok for voluntary review.

In a statement, Europol clarified that on September 28, “a day of large-scale voluntary signaling action took place between TikTok, Europol’s European Counter-Terrorism Center (ECTC) and 11 countries,” including Portugal, targeting “content suspected of terrorism and violent extremism online”.

“In collaboration with the video sharing platform TikTok, researchers from participating countries, together with the European Union Internet Content Signaling Unit (IRU) of the ECTC, conducted an exercise to detect material that glorifies past terrorist attacks or perpetrators of terrorist acts” , EUROPOL further states.

TikTok regularly publishes statistics on the removal of violent extremism content in its quarterly transparency reports.

The latest report shows that TikTok has proactively removed 95% of its violent extremism content.

The action under investigation was launched by authorities in Spain and the EU Internet Content Signaling Unit (EU IRU), in cooperation with law enforcement authorities in the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Malta, Portugal, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

The EU IRU was established on July 1, 2015 and is based in Europol’s European Counter-Terrorism Center.

Europol also states that this “routing action day is part of an ongoing public-private partnership between TikTok, law enforcement authorities and Europol, which aims to combat internet misuse by terrorists, prevent online radicalization and protect fundamental rights.”

Europol also says it has conducted similar exercises with other IT platforms.
