North Korea says missile launches were ‘tactical nuclear exercises’

The missile launches carried out by North Korea in recent weeks were “tactical nuclear exercises” overseen by North Korean President Kim Jong-un, North Korea’s KCNA news agency revealed today.

According to the same news agency, the “Korean People’s Army Units, responsible for the use of strategic nuclear weapons, organized military exercises between September 25 and October 9, to verify and evaluate the nuclear deterrent and counterattack capacity of the country”.

And that military capability “is a severe warning to enemies,” North Korea’s official agency wrote.

In the past two weeks, North Korea has launched at least seven ballistic missile launches in a series of weapons tests.

The seventh launch took place on Saturday, hours after the United States and South Korea wrapped up another naval exercise off the east coast of the Korean peninsula.

On Thursday, South Korea said 12 North Korean planes had flown over the common border region, prompting Seoul to deploy 30 military devices to the same area in response to Pyongyang’s move.
