Five consecutive earthquakes, with a magnitude of up to 6.3, shook western Afghanistan this Saturday morning, reported the American Geophysical Institute (USGS). Authorities say there are at least 14 dead and 78 injured.
“These are the figures recorded so far in the central hospital, but they are not definitive,” said the director of public health of Herat province, Mohammad Taleb Shahid, quoted by AFP.
“We have information that there are people buried under the rubble,” he added.
The largest tremor occurred at 12:11 local time (four hours more than in Portugal), at a depth of 14 kilometers and 33 kilometers from the city of Zindah Khan, located in the province of Herat, in western Afghanistan.
Four consecutive aftershocks of 5.5 followed; 4.7; 6.3; and 5.9, respectively, in one hour.
