6.0 magnitude earthquake in southern Mexico

A magnitude 6.0 earthquake was recorded last night in southern Mexico and was felt in the country’s capital, but caused only material damage, according to local authorities.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the city of Matías Romero, located in the State of Oaxaca, the national seismological service announced on X (formerly Twitter), which had previously estimated the magnitude of the earthquake at 6.3.

So far no “loss of human life” has been reported, the secretary of the government of Oaxaca, Jesús Romero, told the local press.

According to him, the earthquake damaged roads, particularly the one that gives access to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the narrowest part of Mexican territory, which separates the Pacific Ocean from the Atlantic.

In the city of Oaxaca, the facades of buildings were damaged by the earthquake, which also caused cracks in a building that housed a hospital and a road bridge, Romero explained, specifying that there were also power outages.

Previously, on social networks, the Civil Protection services of the Government of Mexico had stated that they continued to “monitor the epicenter area” of the earthquake.

The earthquake was felt in several areas of the Mexican capital, which issued an alert, causing dozens of people to leave their homes.

“We feel a slight shock,” Martí Batres, mayor of Mexico City, where almost nine million inhabitants live, published in X. “So far no damage has been reported,” she added.

The governor of the State of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara, said that authorities are “analyzing the possible effects” of the earthquake in the region.

Mexico is located in the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire”, an area where the meeting of several tectonic plates causes high seismic activity.

On September 19, 2017, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake killed 369 people, most in Mexico City. In 1985, another 8.1 magnitude earthquake devastated the center of the capital and killed more than 10,000 people.
