New earthquake in Afghanistan leaves one dead and 150 injured

One person was killed and around 150 injured after a 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Herat in northwestern Afghanistan today.

According to the head of the relief and emergency team in Herat province, Mohammad Zahir Noorzai, the number of victims could increase, as resources have not yet reached all affected areas.

The earthquake occurred at 3:36 a.m. (4:36 a.m. in Lisbon), with the epicenter 33 kilometers from the city of Herat, in the province of the same name, where a thousand people died in the earthquakes recorded earlier this month. .

On October 7, entire towns were destroyed by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake that caused more than a thousand deaths, 90% of whom were women and children, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Another large earthquake, which occurred on October 11, whose epicenter was located about 30 kilometers north of Herat, caused panic among a traumatized population and caused at least one death and a hundred injuries.

Afghanistan is suffering a serious humanitarian crisis, with the widespread withdrawal of foreign aid since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.

Providing shelter in large numbers as winter approaches will be a challenge for Taliban authorities, who have strained relations with international aid organizations.

Afghanistan is frequently affected by earthquakes, particularly in the Hindu Kush mountain range, near the junction between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.

In June 2022, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake killed more than a thousand people and left tens of thousands homeless in the southeastern province of Paktika.
