Exclusive Galicia: peaceful autonomy?

Of the demands of the nationalist parties that have been fighting in the Spanish parliament in recent days to guarantee the viability of a new government led by Pedro Sánchez, Nestor Rego’s demands are perhaps the ones that have found the least resonance in the media . However, the sole deputy of the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG), who has served a second consecutive term through formation in Madrid, also plays a decisive role in building a strong majority (with the support of at least 176 of the 350 deputies), within which every vote can be decisive. In the 2019 elections, Rego had already managed to obtain several compensations from the outgoing head of government in exchange for his support for the investiture, such as the suspension of the increase in toll prices on AP-9, the main north-south axis of Galicia managed by the central government, as well as Sánchez’s commitment, on paper, to accelerate the transfer to the Autonomous Power of powers such as the management of the Galician coasts. Now the deputy of the left-wing nationalist party is once again presenting himself as the only Galician politician who has managed to take concrete measures to strengthen the area’s autonomy.

“Four years ago we voted in favor of Sánchez because an agreement was reached that we experienced as very positive, even if the implementation was moderately positive. That is why we now want to see a clear timetable, even if the best element of pressure is knowing that BNG’s voice will remain decisive in the Congress of Deputies.”
