The Ukrainian president announced that a “major international meeting” will take place in Malta this month on his Peace Formula, a 10-point proposal to end the war.
“I have informed the President, Biden, about a major international meeting on the Peace Formula, which will take place this month in Malta”Volodymyr Zelensky said in his address to the nation on Thursday evening, reporting on a telephone conversation with his North American counterpart.
“The United States supports the implementation of the Peace Formula”he claimed.
Zelenskiy also referred to his conversation with UN Secretary General António Guterres on Thursday, in which he praised “the active participation of the UN in the global efforts on the Formula for Peace.”
According to the Ukrainian president, the UN is “ready to send a representative to the next meeting”, which, he explained, will bring together advisers from presidents or governments that support the document.
The meeting in Malta will be the third organized by Ukraine in this format. The two previous meetings, held this year in Denmark and Saudi Arabia, were attended by dozens of advisors to governments and presidents from around the world, convened by the head of the Ukrainian presidential office, Andri Yermak.
Ukraine plans to organize a summit to approve the Peace Formula, with as many world leaders as possible present, but many of the leaders who sent advisers to the meeting have close relations with Russia and were unavailable.
Zelensky’s peace plan includes the return of military and civilian prisoners and the protection of the environment, nuclear power, energy and food security. The key point is the restoration of territorial integrity, recognized by the UN.
Critics see the plan as fanciful because one of the conditions is the total withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
