Third aid shipment to Gaza passes Rafah border

A third humanitarian aid convoy entered the Gaza Strip on Monday across the border with Egypt, the French agency AFP reported.

The first shipment of aid, transported in 20 trucks, entered the Gaza Strip on Saturday, followed by a second convoy of 15 trucks on Sunday.

The Rafah border crossing, which connects the Sinai Peninsula with the Gaza Strip, is the only access point to territory controlled by the Islamist group Hamas and not under Israeli control.

An Egyptian security source told the Spanish agency EFE The third train consists of twenty trucks and transports medicines, medical supplies and baby food.

The trucks were diverted to the Israeli-controlled Al Awja border post to be inspected before being allowed into Gaza, the same Egyptian source said.

The United States announced on Sunday, following a conversation between President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, that the Gaza Strip will now benefit from “a continued flow” of aid from Egypt.

The Gaza Strip has been under an Israeli land, air and sea blockade since Hamas seized power in the territory of 2.3 million inhabitants in 2007.

Since October 9, two days after the start of the war with Hamas, Israel has completely besieged the Gaza Strip and cut off water, electricity and food supplies.

The current war between Israel and Hamas was sparked by an unprecedented attack by commandos of the Islamist group on Israeli territory on October 7, which left 1,400 dead.

In response, Israel has bombed Palestinian territory, whose authorities have reported the deaths of approximately 4,700 people as a result of Israeli strikes.
