Israeli army says it killed ‘hundreds of fighters’ in Gaza

The Israeli army claimed this Monday to have killed “dozens of fighters” of Islamic militias entrenched in buildings and tunnels in the Gaza Strip, controlled by the Islamist movement Hamas, during clashes in recent hours.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) explained that “these terrorists” were trying to attack Israeli troops, according to a statement.

In recent hours, the Israeli army continued to expand ground operations in the Palestinian enclave.

One of the Israeli planes, guided by troops on the ground, hit a Hamas building, where 20 militants of the movement were located.

Another Israeli plane hit an anti-tank missile launcher, where an unknown number of Islamist fighters were located, in the area of Al Azhar University, in Gaza.

On Friday, the Israeli military announced that it was expanding ground operations in the Gaza Strip and intensifying bombing.

In Monday’s statement, the IDF said it had struck 600 targets in recent days, including weapons depots, dozens of anti-tank missile launchers and Hamas hideouts.

On October 7, the Islamist movement Hamas launched a surprise attack against southern Israel with the launch of thousands of rockets and the incursion of armed militiamen. The attack left 1,400 dead, more than 5,400 injured and more than 230 hostages taken to Gaza.

In response, Israel declared war on Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since 2007 and is classified as terrorist by the European Union and the United States, bombing several of the group’s infrastructure in the Gaza Strip, while imposing a total siege of the territory with cutoff of water, fuel and electricity supplies.

Since then, the Israeli army has bombed Gaza in retaliation and, on Friday, expanded ground operations, which have already caused more than 8,000 deaths and more than 20,000 injuries.
