A Palestinian was shot dead by Israeli police on Monday after stabbing and seriously wounding a border police officer at a gas station in occupied East Jerusalem, a police spokesman said.
“A terrorist living in East Jerusalem arrived at the Mendelbaum gas station in Jerusalem armed with a knife. The terrorist stabbed a Border Police officer in the upper part of the body and, after grabbing the police officer’s gun and unsuccessfully trying to fire, fled into the neighborhood. scene”, the spokesperson explained.
“The Border Police officers present on the scene confronted the terrorist and neutralized him, opening fire”added the same source who confirmed to Spanish news agency Efe that the attacker died on the spot.
Israel’s emergency medical service Magen David Adom also said the injured officer was a 22-year-old man, who was taken to Shaare Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem in serious condition.
This attack comes amid a climate of high tension in the city due to the war between Israel and Palestinian militias in the Gaza Strip, led by the Islamist group Hamas.
So far, and after more than three weeks of conflict, Jerusalem has recorded only a few isolated episodes of violence, but several analysts have warned of the dangers of the conflict spreading across the holy city.
Today marks the 24th day of the war between Israel and Hamas, which began with a surprise attack by the Israeli group on Israeli territory on October 7. The attack caused approximately 1,400 deaths, more than 5,400 injuries and 239 hostages were taken to Gaza.
In retaliation, Israel has since bombed the Strip and expanded its ground operations on Friday, killing a total of more than 8,000 Palestinians and wounding more than 20,000, according to Hamas figures.
