A potentially armed man is holding at least one person hostage in a post office in the department of Saitama, northwest of Tokyo, local Japanese authorities announced this Tuesday.
Around 2:15 p.m. local time (5:15 a.m. in Lisbon), “a person was taken hostage and took refuge in a post office” in the town of Warabi, the authorities of this municipality indicated on their website.
Authorities stated that the attacker was in possession of an object similar to a firearm.
The incident occurred as police were investigating a previous incident involving one or more gunshots that were heard in the same area earlier that day.
During the incident two people were slightly injured, although the causes of the injuries are unknown.
Television footage showed the alleged attacker inside the post office, wearing a dark coat and cap and holding what appeared to be a firearm.
