Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was cited on Tuesday, October 30, in the trial of Jair Bolsonaro at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE), which declared Brazil’s former president unfit for the next eight years for a second time.
Alexandre de Moraes, who, in addition to being a TSE judge, is one of the eleven members of the Brazilian Federal Supreme Court, called the scene in which Bolsonaro deposes the President of the Republic of Portugal to make way for businessman Luciano Hang, a well-known Bolsonaro supporter, ‘pathetic ‘ during the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Brazil’s independence, September 7, 2022.
“The president [Bolsonaro] removing the President of Portugal and summoning his election leader, dressed in his traditional parakeet green attire [Hang] It is a pitiful and sad scene for Brazil’s broadcasts around the world,” the judge said.
The majority of TSE judges decided that Bolsonaro took advantage of the ceremony to campaign, less than a month before the elections. For example, he sentenced him to eight years of exclusion for “abuse of power” and “inappropriate use of the media”. The former Brazilian president had already been sentenced to the same sentence during another trial in July this year.
The new thing about this process is that in addition to him, his candidate for the vice presidency, General Walter Braga Netto, was also declared ineligible this time. Braga Netto was Bolsonarism’s preferred name to run for mayor of Rio de Janeiro in next year’s municipal elections. Both must also pay a fine of 465 thousand reais, about 80 thousand euros.
