Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that agents of the federal agency encountered three individuals breaking a window of a government vehicle, which was currently unoccupied, around midnight (local time) on Monday.
“During the encounter, a federal agent fired a service weapon and it is believed no one was injured. The criminals immediately fled the scene in a red vehicle. A regional alert was sent to support units,” Guglielmi said in a statement.
Guglielmi indicated that there was “no threat” to the people whose security is in charge of the Secret Services during the event and that the case is already being investigated by the Washington Metropolitan Police Department.
The agent involved in this episode is part of the security team of Naomi Biden, the president’s granddaughter.
The US capital Washington DC has seen a sharp increase in crime rates.
For example, according to local police statistics, motor vehicle theft increased by 98% last year.
