The devotion to Diego Armando Maradona, the player who led the Argentina team to the world title in 1986, among many other achievements, is not only measured by the founding of the “Maradonian Church”, a parody of 10 commandments and all: it is glued to the skin of each of the Argentinians. Therefore, any attack on the star, which died almost three years ago, is seen as desecration. And whoever commits it, like Javier Milei, was once branded a criminal against Argentina.
In addition to insulting Pope Francis, Milei, an iconoclast, attacked Maradona in a 2016 social media post that has now, not coincidentally, been found on October 30, the day D10S would have turned 63 years old if he were still alive. On Twitter, now called X, the far-right candidate wishes “a good Tuesday to all ‘Mardedroga’ fanatics.” ‘Given their disdain for numbers, they are certainly Peronists [corrente política dos Kirchner, de Alberto Fernández e de Sergio Massa]”, to be continued.

And then Milei adds a comparative table between Maradona and Pelé, in which the Brazilian, in addition to an advantage in the number of goals and titles, has “zero goals with his hand”, unlike the Argentinian, no “inhalation”, unlike the Argentinian, to whom he attributes the 57 kilos inhaled, not a “kiss on the mouth of another man”, unlike the Argentinian, who one day, after scoring a goal, celebrated in that way with Caniggia, and no overdose, unlike the Argentinian’s “twelve”.
Milei stirred a hornet’s nest. For example, in the comments they call him the “least Argentinian man in humanity” and say: “it is further proof that you have nothing to do with this country”. “Everything will turn against you, Javier” and “instead of worrying about others, worry about yourself because you have a very weak heart,” they vow. And they warn: “Be careful, stupid, Diego is watching”.
Sergio Massa, Milei’s Peronist opponent in the second round, has exploited the far-right candidate’s controversial statements, saying Argentina does not deserve to be described “in a derogatory way”, as he claims his opponent is doing.
Maradona was known for his left-wing political leanings, mainly associated with Kirchnerism and reinforced by praise for Latin American leaders such as Hugo Chávez, Lula da Silva or Fidel Castro.
