2.5 million euros. A bottle of whiskey has never cost so much

A bottle of The Macallan 1926, described by auction house Sotheby’s as the “most valuable whiskey in the world”, was auctioned this Saturday in London for a record value of 2.1 million pounds, about 2.5 million euros.

The rare bottle was expected to fetch between £750,000 and £1.2 million, but sales ultimately exceeded estimates of £2,187,500.

The sale set a “new record for any bottle of spirits or wine sold at auction,” Sotheby’s said.

One of the Macallan 1926 bottles had already set the previous record, in 2019, when it sold for 1.5 million at the same London auction house.

Sotheby’s whiskey director Jonny Fowle told AFP he was allowed to taste the award-winning whiskey before the sale.

“I tasted a little drop, just a little drop. It’s very rich, there’s a lot of dried fruit in it, as you would expect, a lot of spice, a lot of wood,” he said.

Fowle added that the spirit was aged in dark European oak for 60 years, which was reflected in the color.

“It’s not a whiskey to drink lightly. It’s a rich, incredible drink.”

The bottles are among 40 that Macallan, based in Moray, northern Scotland, has confirmed were bottled in Cask 263 in 1986.
