The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, welcomed this Wednesday The agreement between Israel and Hamas. for the release of hostages, but considered that “There is still much to be done”said his spokesperson.
Guterres “welcomes the agreement reached between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar, supported by Egypt and the United States,” the spokesperson said in a brief statement received in Geneva, Switzerland.
“The United Nations will mobilize all its capabilities to support the implementation of the agreement and maximize your positive impact on the humanitarian situation in Gaza”he added, quoted by the French agency AFP.
The agreement provides for the release of 50 hostages held in the Gaza Strip, in exchange for 150 Palestinian prisoners and a four-day truce in the territory.
The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also welcomed the agreementbut insisted that “it is not enough to end the suffering of civilians.”
The head of the WHO called for the release of all hostages and, in the meantime, for care to be provided to those who remain in captivity.
He also insisted on a ceasefire to be able to effectively help the population of Gaza long term and safely.
Some 240 people were kidnapped on the day of the Hamas attack on Israeli soil on October 7, which killed 1,200 people, most of them civilians, according to Israeli authorities.
