Russian actress Polina Menshikh, 40, died on Sunday during an attack by Ukrainian forces in the occupied Donetsk region, which hit a theater where she was giving a show for Russian soldiers. In addition to the actress, 25 members of the military also died.
The information was provided by Russia’s state news agency TASS and The Moscow Times newspaper. A video circulating on social media shows a woman, who appears to be Polina Menshikh, singing and playing the guitar before an explosion occurs.
The actress died in hospital due to injuries sustained in the attack on the village of Kumachove.
A St. Petersburg theater group affiliated with Menshikh confirmed the actress’s death and said the show will be in her honor. “It is with great pain that we inform you that Polina Menshikh died during a performance in the Donbass as a result of bombings,” said a statement from the theater’s press service.
The commander of the Ukrainian air reconnaissance unit “Birds of Magyar” wrote on his Telegram account that Sunday’s attack was “revenge on the 128th [Brigada]”, in reference to the November 3 Russian attack on an awards ceremony for Ukrainian military personnel.
