The head of the Israeli army, Herzi Halevi, guaranteed on Thursday that the military offensive against the Gaza Strip “will continue until victory” despite the four-day ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.
“We will not end the war. We will continue until victory. We must move forward and continue to work in other areas where Hamas is located,” Halevi said during a meeting with brigade commanders of the 36th Division in the northern Gaza Strip.
Likewise, Halevi emphasized that “the pressure in the maneuver is such that the objectives will be achieved and the conditions will be created for the release of the hostages,” according to a statement published by the Israeli army through its internet portal.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized that the three objectives of the offensive are “the elimination of Hamas,” “the return of those who were kidnapped” and “ensuring that what happened does not happen again,” in a reference to the attacks of the group. Although Israel has said the ceasefire will come into effect on Friday and Hamas has indicated it will take effect from today, Qatar – which played a mediating role – has stated that an announcement on this situation will be made in the coming hours.
