The mayor of Charleroi, Paul Magnette, reported on Thursday that at least 85 graves from the Jewish canton in one of the city’s cemeteries had been desecrated and several objects and bronze Stars of David had been stolen.
In a statement, the mayor stated that “the location chosen and the theft of numerous Stars of David leave no doubt about the anti-Semitic nature of the intentions” and that he had already instructed his services to notify the families.
The desecrations were discovered on Wednesday by the gravedigger of the Marcinelle cemetery, a neighborhood in Charleroi. The events would date back to the previous night.
The municipality filed a complaint and an investigation was opened.
Belgium has seen an increase in anti-Semitic actions since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
“Anti-Semitism is an evil that we must continue to fight with all our strength,” said Paul Magnette today, who also chairs the French-speaking Socialist Party.
