Finnish Defense Minister Antti Häkkänen announced on Tuesday that the country’s arms industry will increase its ammunition production to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian armed forces.
“We have completed negotiations on how Finland will increase production of ammunition intended to strengthen Ukrainian weapons. The decision will be made in the near future”Häkkänen told the newspaper Iltalehtiwhere he also hinted that these plans will be finalized before Christmas.
The Defense Minister stated that the “plans are ready” and that the main goal of this measure is to “significantly increase ammunition production”, in order to “support Ukraine even more strongly”, while Finland strengthens its capabilities.
“Accelerating ammunition production has two objectives: supporting Ukraine in the defensive struggle and strengthening the defense capabilities of European countries. Over the past thirty years, this capacity has often been ignored.”the minister acknowledged.
Häkkänen stated that Finland is in a position to play a key role in this area and hopes that the country will serve as an example for other allies of Kiev.
“The main priority of our influence in the EU and NATO is to put pressure on major countries to increase ammunition production”he concluded.
