Three German Shepherd dogs escaped from their owner’s garden and attacked a Greek woman, who died in her garden, police said, adding that the dogs’ owner will be presented to a prosecutor this Monday.
The attack took place around 2pm on Sunday (12pm in Lisbon) in the village of Neochorouda, about 16 kilometers northwest of the city of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest.
The dogs escaped through a hole in the owner’s fence and ran about 80 yards to the woman’s yard where she was working, he added.
A man, who police said was deaf and dumb, was helping the woman with gardening but was far away from her at the time of the attack and could not hear her screams.
Neighbors came to help and chased the dogs away, but the victim was severely beaten and bled profusely. First responders, who arrived on the scene in an ambulance shortly afterwards, confirmed the death, police said.
The dog’s owner, 37 years old, was arrested and will appear before the public prosecutor today. The dogs are being held in a kennel and will be slaughtered, he added.
