Japan confirmed its first death from MPox (monkeypox) this Thursday, more than a year after the first case of infection was discovered in the country.
Japan’s Health Ministry said the patient was 30 years old, had a weakened immune system and lived in Saitama Prefecture, an area between 20 and 30 kilometers north of Tokyo.
The Asia-Pacific country confirmed its first infection with MPox – a disease also known as monkeypox – on July 3, 2022, and recorded 227 cases on December 3, the Japanese government said.
The disease, first reported in humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, is characterized by a rash that may be accompanied by fever, sore throat or painful lymph nodes.
In May 2023, the World Health Organization declared the end of the international emergency related to the mpox outbreak, after recording approximately 87,000 infections in 111 countries, with 140 deaths.
