Russia announced this Saturday that it intends to carry out seven test launches of intercontinental ballistic missiles in 2024, which it will inform the United States of in due course.
“Russia will inform the United States about any launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles and submarine-launched ballistic missiles,” Sergey Karakaev, commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, told the Defense Ministry’s Red Star newspaper.
This official added that the United States also informs Russia, at least 24 hours in advance, of any missile tests carried out by its strategic forces.
The Russian general explained that the tests are aimed at improving its combat characteristics, the work of command and control posts and the implementation of new information and communications technologies.
Successful tests will allow Russia to “significantly improve the combat potential of troops to adequately respond to expected threats against the country,” he said.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that the Russian nuclear triad – intercontinental missiles, atomic submarines and strategic bombers – makes it possible to overcome the United States’ anti-missile defense shield and “guarantee the security of Russia.”
Putin also highlighted that Russian hypersonic weapons are gradually entering service in the armed forces. This is the case of the Sarmat heavy intercontinental missile (SS-X-30 Satan-2, according to NATO), capable of carrying between 10 and 15 individually guided nuclear warheads.
This missile, which Putin says has “practically unlimited range,” will soon enter service in the Krasnoyarsk region of Siberia, according to Karakaev.
Putin, who put strategic forces on alert shortly after the start of the war in Ukraine in February 2022, assured this week that the military campaign will continue until Russia achieves its objectives, that is, the total demilitarization of the neighboring country.
