Eurowings, on behalf of all subsidiaries of the Lufthansa group, demands compensation of 740,000 euros from Next Generation climate activists for blocking the runways of three German airports last summer and autumn 2022.
According to this Sunday’s online edition of the newspaper “Bild am Sonntag”, the action of the activists, on July 13, at Hamburg airport alone (north), affected 57 flights of the Lufthansa group, including Lufthansa, Eurowings and Swiss, already 8,500 passengers.
The damage caused is estimated at 400 thousand euros, an invoice that has already been sent to ten activists, who cut an access fence and entered the roads on bicycles.
According to information provided at the time by the police, four of them stuck to the ground on the access roads to the tracks.
At the Düsseldorf airfield (west), a parallel action on the same day prevented the takeoff of 24 planes and 3,000 passengers, which would have caused economic losses of around 220,000 euros to the airlines.
Last Generation members explained last summer that they were protesting “the government’s lack of planning and lack of law enforcement on the climate crisis.”
In November 2022, a protest at the Berlin-Brandenburg airfield disrupted the flight schedule of 25 aircraft and five thousand passengers.
In this case, six activists received a joint bill of 120,000 euros, which they are obliged to pay, although none of them paid the required compensation.
Last Generation activists have been protesting in Germany since early 2022 with roadblocks and other actions to demand more climate protection.
The most recent was carried out in several German cities, spraying Christmas trees with orange paint.
The Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was also painted with paint. According to the Berlin Heritage Administration, the damage amounted to 115,000 euros.
These actions contributed to Berlin analyzing once again whether the Última Generación group should be classified as a criminal organization.
