The European Union was the region on the planet that received the most refugees since 2020

The European Union (EU) is the region on the planet that has received the most refugees since 2020, according to the Migration Atlas, published this Monday, in part due to the flight of almost four million Ukrainians from the war.

According to the Migration Atlas, published by the European Commission on the occasion of International Migrants Day, between 2020 and 2023 the number of refugees entering the EU increased by 173%.

In 2023 there were 36.4 million refugees worldwide, ten million more than three years ago, and 20% were in the EU.

This year the EU counted 7.3 million refugees in the territory of the 27 member states, more than four million from Ukraine, due to the Russian invasion.

In Africa there are 7.7 million dispersed refugees and in Asia the figure is around 15 million.

The report released by the Commission also points out that in almost ten years there has been a gradual increase in the number of residence visas and in 2022 there were more than 3.4 million; In 2013 there were 1.6 million.

Poland was the country that issued the most visas in 2022 (700,264).
