A plane carrying 303 Indian passengers from the United Arab Emirates to Nicaragua has been detained since Thursday in France on suspicion of human trafficking, the Paris prosecutor’s office announced this Friday, which opened an investigation.
The seizure of the device occurred after “an anonymous complaint” according to which the plane “was carrying Indian passengers (…) probably victims of human trafficking,” declared the Paris prosecutor’s office, cited by the French news agency AFP. .
According to a source close to the case, who stated that the plane stopped in France to refuel, the Indian passengers could want to go to Central America and then try to enter the United States or Canada illegally.
An investigation is being carried out “to verify if there is evidence that corroborates the suspicion of trafficking in human beings by an organized group, a crime punishable by a sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of three million euros,” he added. the Paris prosecutor’s office. .
The same source indicated that “hearings and investigations are being carried out on the conditions and objectives of passenger transportation.”
The civil government of La Marne, in northeastern France, indicated that the plane, from the Romanian company Legend Airlines, “remained immobilized on the runway at Vatry airport after landing. The municipality also confirmed that the plane was still on the ground this afternoon.
