Actress and singer Cher has filed a court request to temporarily take control of her son Elijah Blue Allman, 47,’s finances, citing mental health and substance abuse issues.
Oscar and Grammy winner Cher filed a petition for custody of her son in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, giving her temporary control over the finances of Elijah Blue Allman, her son with musician Gregg Allman.
Under Cher’s order, Elijah Allman is entitled to regular payments from a trust fund. But “given his ongoing mental health and substance abuse issues,” Cher says she is “concerned that the money paid out to Elijah will immediately be spent on drugs, leaving Elijah without the means to support himself and Elijah’s life is in danger.”
Contacted by the Associated Press, the attorney for the singer’s son said Elijah Allman said he was “good, capable and of sound mind and body,” declining further comment on whether he would oppose the petition .
Cher’s lawsuit requires an urgent court decision, with a hearing scheduled for January.
The request aims to maintain control over the finances of Elijah Allman and his wife Marieangela King, from whom he filed for divorce in 2021.
The two remain legally married. An October filing from King states that the couple agreed to drop divorce proceedings and work on their marriage, but she has not seen him in person in six months.
Cher’s petition states that the couple’s “tumultuous relationship is marked by a cycle of drug addiction and mental health crises” and that she believes King “does not support Elijah’s recovery.”
Cher has two sons, one from each of her marriages: Chaz Bono, 54, with the late Sonny Bono, and Elijah Allman, the former singer and guitarist for the band Deadsy and known professionally as P. Exeter Blue.
