A 6.6-magnitude earthquake has struck Sichuan, a mountainous province in the southwestern part of the country regularly hit by earthquakes, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) announced.
The tremor was recorded at 12:52 local time, or 6:52 French time on Monday morning, with an estimated depth of 10 kilometers and an epicenter around the city-district of Kangding. Authorities reported no immediate deaths or injuries.
The quake was felt in several cities in the province, including the regional capital Chengdu, some 200 kilometers away.
A “relatively strong” tremor
The tremor was “relatively strong,” said Chen, a resident who did not give her full name.
“Some of my neighbors downstairs said they felt (the tremor) very clearly,” he added.
Sichuan, highly mountainous and known worldwide for its panda reserves, is usually hit several times a month by earthquakes of varying intensities.
Back in June, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the province, killing at least four people and injuring dozens more.
