At least nine civilians, including an activist and his pregnant wife, have been killed since October 7 in northern Syria, in an escalation of hostilities in the conflict, the UN Human Rights Office warned on Friday.
The activist, who was organizing protests on social media against military action by groups in the region, supported by neighboring Turkey, was killed two weeks ago in a rural area east of Aleppo along with his wife, and since then there have been at least seven others. civilian deaths, including four women and three children.
“We are deeply concerned about the increase in the population affected by the conflict and the massive displacement of civilians,” UN office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told a news conference.
The deaths coincide with an escalation in hostilities between the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) terror group and forces linked to Turkey, which the United Nations fears will spread to other areas of Aleppo and Idlib, two of Syria’s main cities.
The United Nations office has also documented at least 11 civilians injured in this escalation of violence, and Shamdasani stressed that the true number of dead could be higher.
Reports of attacks with explosive devices in residential areas are also “particularly alarming”, says the UN body, which urged all parties, including countries involved in the conflict, to exert their influence to reduce military operations.
