Harry Potter celebrates 25 years with British coin collection

The famous young wizard Harry Potter will appear in a coin collection in the UK as part of the celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the release of the first book in the saga written by JK Rowling, it has been announced.

“The Royal Mint is launching a collection of enchanting coins to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” the British coin and banknote printing agency said in a statement.

The collection will feature four pieces, including a Harry Potter drawing, as well as the Hogwarts Express train, Professor Albus Dumbledore and Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

According to the Royal Mint, the pieces contain an optical effect that mimics the impact of a “thunderbolt” when turned for light.

This effect is generated thanks to a state-of-the-art laser that gives the coins a “magic” look, but also protects and certifies them.

Released in 1997, the seven-part series tells the story of the adventures of a young wizard named Harry Potter at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and his fight against Lord Voldemort, a dark wizard seeking immortality.

The book sales of the saga are hundreds of millions of euros, while the eight films generated billions of euros in revenue.

The collectible coins unveiled by the Royal Mint also include two coins illustrated with portraits of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in September, and another two featuring the official portrait of King Charles III.
