Italy’s ambassador to London, Inigo Lambertini, on Thursday criticized The Economist magazine for allegedly re-using stereotypes about Italians on the cover of the latest issue that focuses on Britain’s political chaos.
Under the headline “Welcome to Britaly,” the cover features outgoing British Prime Minister Liz Truss dressed as Britannia with a shield made of pizza in the colors of the Italian flag and a spaghetti fork instead of a pitchfork.
Lambertini emphasized that he enjoyed reading the magazine and said in a letter to the editor that the cover was “inspired by the oldest stereotypes”.
“While spaghetti and pizza are the most sought-after foods in the world, as Europe’s second largest manufacturer, we encourage you to choose a change in our aerospace, biotech, automotive or pharmaceutical sectors for the next turnaround”noted.
“Whatever the choice, it would put Italy in the spotlight more accurately, also taking into account their not-so-secret admiration for our economic model.”he added.
