This Monday, the SEF granted 51,716 temporary shelters to people who fled the war in Ukraine and informed the Public Ministry of the situation of 728 children who arrived in Portugal without their parents.
According to the latest update carried out by the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF), since the beginning of the war, on February 24, Portugal has granted 51,716 temporary protections to Ukrainian citizens and foreigners residing in Ukraine, of which 30,792 to women and 20,924 to men. .
The SEF advances that the largest number of temporary protections granted continues to be Lisbon (11,121), Cascais (3,106), Porto (2,519), Sintra (1,778) and Albufeira (1,284).
The SEF also indicates that it issued 42,347 residence permit certificates under the temporary protection regime.
This certificate, issued after the National Health Service, Social Security and the Tax Administration have assigned the respective numbers, is necessary for refugees to start working and access support.
The SEF also adds that requests for temporary protection were authorized for 13,632 minors, which represents around 26% of the total.
The SEF also reveals that it communicated to the Public Ministry (MP) the situation of 728 Ukrainian minors who arrived in Portugal without their parents or legal representatives, cases in which it is considered that there is no “current or imminent danger”.
In these situations, in which in most cases the child arrived in Portugal with a relative, the case is reported to the MP for the appointment of a legal representative and eventual promotion of a process for the protection of the child.
The SEF also communicated to the Commission for the Protection of Children and Young People the situation of 15 minors who arrived in Portugal unaccompanied, but with someone other than their parents or accredited legal representative, these cases representing “current or imminent danger”.
The request for temporary protection to Portugal can be made through this ‘online’ platform created by the SEF, available in three languages, it is not necessary for adults to use the counters of this security service.
However, in the case of minors, it is mandatory to go to a counter of the Immigration and Borders Service to confirm their identity and affiliation.
On February 24, Russia launched a military offensive in Ukraine that caused more than eight million people to flee, more than 6.6 million of them outside the country, according to UN estimates.
The Russian invasion was condemned by the international community at large, which responded by sending weapons to Ukraine and tightening economic and political sanctions on Moscow.
