In Japan, renderings of plastic plates are a multibillion-dollar industry, but one pastry shop’s fake egg tarts are so realistic that five of them have been sold to customers by accident.
Known as ‘shokuhin sampuru’, the plastic food displays are painstakingly crafted to present the foods sold by the establishments as realistically as possible, whether it’s the moisture droplets on a pint of beer or the glistening surface of a bowl of ramen
But the plastic cakes from Osaka-based company Andrew’s Egg Tart were so convincing that even the staff couldn’t tell the difference, inadvertently selling five of them to two customers on Saturday at a temporary stall near a train station in Tottori, western Japan. .
Stickers will now be used
“We are very sorry that we sold these samples in error,” a company representative said Wednesday.
An employee noticed the mistake shortly after the sale, and luckily, customers returned the fake cakes to the stall before taking a potentially painful first bite.
Stickers will now be used to distinguish real cakes from plastic desserts to prevent further incidents.
