Former mayor of Lula da Silva’s party assassinated in Jandira

A Brazilian politician from the Workers’ Party (PT) was assassinated this Friday in Jandira, São Paulo state, shot very close to his home, the shots being fired from a vehicle.

Reginaldo Camilo dos Santos, 51, known as Zezinho, had run for federal deputy in the October 2 elections, where he received around 9,000 votes, but was not elected. In 2020 he was a candidate to preside over the municipality of Jandira, coming in third place, managing to secure the position of councilor.

In the last week, several images have been published on social networks showing him campaigning for Fernando Haddad of the PT, a candidate for governor, and Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a candidate for the presidency of Brazil.

The authorities indicated that for now the motive for the crime is unknown, although federal deputy Jilmar Tatto (PT) has indicated that the first reports point to a hate crime, although the case must be analyzed in detail.

“Witnesses reported that a person passed shouting Bolsonaro, he [Zezinho] Lula yelled and the person pulled out his gun and fired three shots. Everything indicates that it was the action of a Bolsonaro supporter within this climate of intolerance in the country,” she said, aforementioned by Globe.

The assassination took place two days before the presidential elections. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the first round of the elections with 48.4% of the vote and Jair Bolsonaro received 43.2%, so now the two candidates face each other in a second round scheduled for this Sunday.
