The Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is following the events after the tragedy in South Korea during the Halloween festivities, maintaining contact with the authorities who have not identified any Portuguese among the victims, according to an official source.
A source from the Portuguese multinational told Lusa that, so far, there is no news of any Portuguese citizen among the victims, a situation that continues to be monitored.
On the social network Twitter, the Portuguese multinational expressed its “heartfelt solidarity with the South Korean people and their authorities after the tragic incident in Seoul.”
“Our thoughts are with all those affected and those providing emergency assistance at this difficult time,” the message reads.
At least 150 people were killed and more were injured on Saturday night during a stampede in central Seoul, when a Halloween crowd rushed down a narrow street, killing dozens of people.
Also through the social network Twitter, the Portuguese Prime Minister sent a message of solidarity to all those affected by the “tragic incident”.
“Portugal stands in solidarity with South Korea and all those who were affected by the tragic incident in Seoul. Our sincere condolences to all the families who are mourning the loss of their loved ones,” wrote António Costa.
For his part, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, sent a message of condolences and solidarity to the South Korean Head of State, Yoon Suk Yeol, for this tragedy.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol today announced the start of a period of national mourning after the death of at least 150 people on Halloween night in Seoul and promised a “deep investigation” into the causes.
Yoon Suk-yeol declared national mourning “until the accident is under control” and vowed to give investigation of the case “top priority” in a speech to the nation.
