Rishi Sunak shows willingness to work with Lula da Silva

The new British prime minister, Rishi Sunak, expressed on Monday his willingness to work with the future president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, whom he congratulated on his victory in Sunday’s elections.

“Congratulations to Lula for his electoral victory in Brazil,” Sunak wrote on the social network Twitter, quoted by the French agency AFP.

“I look forward to working together on issues that are important to the UK and Brazil, from growing the global economy to protecting the planet’s natural resources and promoting democratic values,” added the British Conservative leader.

The Workers’ Party candidate (left) won the second round of the presidential elections on Sunday with 50.9% of the vote, compared to 49.1% for the current president, Jair Bolsonaro, the far-right candidate .

Lula da Silva, 77, had already served two presidential terms between 2003 and 2011.

Bolsonaro is the first president of Brazil who fails to be re-elected.

The current head of state has not yet ruled on the results of the elections.
