The US will seek to expel Iran from the main UN women’s commission, for its “brutal” repression of the protests that have shaken the country for weeks, announced the US vice president.
Kamala Harris, the first woman to become vice president, said the US will work with allies to remove Iran from the 45-state UN Commission on the Status of Women and to which members are elected for a period of four years.
Iran began its term in the Commission last March, so it did not last even a year.
Harris, in her statement, said that Iran did not have the “capacity” to participate in the Commission, due to the disrespect for women’s rights and the “brutal” repression of the protests that followed the death, on September 16, of the young Mahsa Amini. , who was arrested by the police for not wearing the Islamic veil properly placed.
The protests have been carried out mainly by young people and women.
At first the demonstrators shouted “Woman! Life! Freedom!”, but with the increase in repression, which resulted in the death of several minors, the scope of the issues was broadened, with the demonstrators shouting “Death to the Islamic Republic!” !
In recent days, the repression has hardened, especially in the universities, after the Revolutionary Guards demanded an end to the protests on Saturday.
The protest has already resulted in the death of at least 108 people and the arrest of another 12,500, according to the Oslo-based non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights.
