North Korea fired a barrage overnight from Thursday to Friday in a maritime “buffer” area, Seoul’s military said, amid increased fire from Pyongyang, including an intercontinental ballistic missile that missed in mid-flight.
Seoul and Washington have extended their joint air exercises, the largest in history, until Saturday, involving hundreds of fighter jets from both sides.
The shelling is “a clear violation” of the 2018 inter-Korean agreement that established buffer zones to reduce tensions between the two sides, South Korea’s general staff said.
“Storm Watcher”
This show of force by Pyongyang comes at a time when South Korea and the United States are conducting the largest air exercises in their history in the region.
The exercise baptisé “Tempête vigilante” constitutes “une manoeuvre militaire agressive et provocatrice visant la République populaire et démocratique de Corée”, given the favor of the north-korean regime, who threatened Seoul and Washington of “paying the most horrible price of the ‘history”.
Officials and analysts have been warning for months that North Korea is about to conduct a nuclear test, which would be its seventh.
