The head of Iranian diplomacy, Abbas Araghchi, convened the United Nations Security Council this Sunday, October 27, to condemn Saturday’s Israeli attacks against the Islamic Republic of Iran.
In a letter sent to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, and to the presidency of the Security Council, he requested “an urgent meeting of the Security Council to take a decisive position and condemn this aggression,” according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Israel carried out strikes early Saturday on military sites in Iran, in retaliation for an Oct. 1 Iranian missile attack on its territory and attacks by Tehran-backed Islamist movements such as the Palestinian Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Iran “reserves the right to respond”
The Israeli military has attacked missile manufacturing facilities and surface-to-air missile batteries, as well as other air systems in the country.
In his letter, Abbas Araghchi indicates that “most of the projectiles fired were intercepted by the Iranian defense systems,” but notes that the attack “damaged the target points” and caused the death of four soldiers.
The Israeli attack constitutes a “clear violation of the sovereignty” of Iran, which “reserves the right to respond to this criminal aggression,” he added.
