A plane from the Tanzanian airline Precision Air crashed into Lake Victoria, in the Kagera region, in the northwest of the country, with 52 people on board, with no reports of fatalities so far.
The plane, which was traveling from Tanzania’s commercial capital Dar es Salaam to Bukoba via Mwanza, crashed into the lake shortly before attempting to land at Bukoba airport, according to preliminary reports from security forces, due to heavy rain and strong winds.
Rescuers, according to the Tanzanian state broadcaster TBC, have already started pulling the 49 passengers and three crew members of the ATR 42-500 aircraft model out of the water.
The country’s president, Samia Suluhu, is already aware of the incident.
“I send my condolences to everyone affected by this accident. We will remain calm as the rescue operation continues, while asking God to help us,” Suluhu said on his Twitter account.
