This Sunday, the Russian regional occupation authorities affirmed that the city of Kherson was left “without electricity or water” and that the Kajovka dam was “damaged”, after two attacks attributed to Ukrainian troops.
Kyiv could suffer the same fate, according to its mayor. On Ukrainian television, Vitali Klitshko warned residents of the Ukrainian capital of a possible blackout.
“I want to address the people of Kyiv, I want them to consider all possible scenarios, even the worst of them,” he said.
40% of energy infrastructure damaged
There have already been outages in Kyiv, with some interruptions even voluntary to limit electricity consumption and avoid blackouts. Indeed, in the country, 40% of the infrastructure related to energy is damaged, which justifies the councilor’s concerns about the arrival of winter.
“If we run out of electricity or water and you have friends or relatives outside of kyiv, in places where there is no lack of water or heating, consider going there to stay longer than expected,” continues Vitali Klitshko.
The United States also accused Russia on Friday of wanting to “freeze” the Ukrainian population this winter for failing to prevail on the battlefield. The foreign ministers of the G7 countries agreed in particular to establish “a coordination mechanism” to help Ukraine “repair and defend” its water and electricity supply facilities that have been hit massively in recent weeks by the Russians. .
