Israel attacks Hamas underground post in Gaza

Israel on Friday night attacked an underground military post of the Hamas Islamic Resistance Movement in the Gaza Strip, from which rockets were launched into Israeli territory, a military spokesman said.

“In response to the Strip’s missiles to Israel tonight” [quinta-feira]Israeli army fighter jets attacked an underground military site at night that was being used as a missile development and production complex,” a military spokesman said in a statement marking the first such attack since early August.

This operation “will significantly impede the escalation” of missile production and Hamas’s attempts to arm itself, he added.

The movement came to power in Gaza in 2007 and Israel holds Hamas responsible for any incident or aggression from the area.

One of the rockets was intercepted by Israel and three fell in Gaza.

The attack was not claimed by any Palestinian faction, although local media reported that it could be linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, in a possible response to the death of one of its members during an Israeli attack on the occupied West Bank.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad is the second largest military force in Gaza after Hamas, two movements considered terrorists by Israel, the European Union and the United States.
