Guterres urges that the conflict not be an excuse to avoid climate responsibilities

The Secretary General of the United Nations, António Guterres, called on Monday that world conflicts not be used as an excuse to evade responsibility for the climate, defending that humanity has to choose between “solidarity or mass suicide”.

In his speech before the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP27) in 2022, Guterres considered that, despite the multiple conflicts that are ravaging the world -such as the war in Ukraine or the Sahel conflict-, “change change has a different scale and timeline” as they “are the defining issue of the current era” and the “central challenge of the century”.

For this reason, he defended that it is “unacceptable, scandalous and counterproductive” to leave the fight against climate change “in the background”, and stressed that “many of the current conflicts are related to the growing climate chaos”.

The UN Secretary General also stated that in the face of global warming and its increasingly rapid impacts, humanity has to “cooperate or die”, so the world has to choose between “being in solidarity” or committing “mass suicide”. ”.
