The German justice system announced this Thursday, November 28, the arrest of a teenager suspected of having made preparations to commit an attack in a context of Islamist radicalization.
The suspect, whose age has not been specified, was remanded in custody on Wednesday after several searches at his home revealed “a strong suspicion that the accused intended to make bombs (…),” according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office. . Prosecutor’s Office in Koblenz, southwestern Germany.
“No clue” suggests that the act was imminent or that a target had been identified, however, the prosecution says.
An entire arsenal seized at his home
From the teenager, in the district of Mainz (southwest), two bayonets, four pieces of pipe fitted with caps at both ends and utensils probably intended for the manufacture of a firing mechanism were seized.
The suspect also obtained instructions on the Internet about manufacturing tube bombs and explosives that could be used in those bombs.
The prosecution also suspects him of Islamist radicalization on the Internet and the dissemination of propaganda content that glorifies the crimes of the Islamic State (IS).
Germany has increased its vigilance against the Islamist threat and the resurgence of anti-Semitism since the unprecedented attack by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas against Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war in the Gaza Strip.
Another teenager was arrested this month on suspicion of planning an attack that allegedly targeted a Christmas market.
A growing threat in Germany
In December 2016, Germany experienced a truck attack at a Christmas market, claimed by the Islamic State group (IS), which left 12 dead in the center of Berlin. This is, to date, the deadliest jihadist attack perpetrated in the country.
Several deadly attacks with suspected Islamist motives have shocked Germany in recent months and several plots have been thwarted.
At the end of last August, a knife attack committed by a Syrian and claimed by IS left three dead and several injured during a party in Solingen (west of the country).
Two months earlier, another knife attack, attributed to an Afghan during an anti-Islam demonstration in Mannheim (west), left one dead, a police officer who had intervened.
