Exclusive Eduardo Paz Ferreira: “A final Republican victory is the legitimacy of all brutality”

What kind of America will we have if, as polls indicate, Republicans gain control of the House of Representatives and maybe even the Senate?

This is the question that haunts us all today, knowing how we will be tomorrow, what our feelings will be regarding what happened to the US in the midterm elections. All polls point to a Republican victory. A comfortable victory in the House of Representatives, less comfortable in the Senate. Gradually, some people have shown up who admit that there might be a big surprise and the Democrats will have a last minute electoral comeback. But in the end, these are just guesses and the most likely one is a Republican victory. Which will create a dramatic situation. On the one hand, an eventual Republican victory is in a sense the legitimization of all the atrocities that have taken place in the US in recent times – and has now manifested itself recently in the attack on the husband of the [líder da Câmara dos Representantes, Nancy] pelosi. And on the other hand, President Joe Biden, with two years in office and a high degree of unpopularity, will be blocked in Congress. He won’t be able to run his program.

And that will also affect the 2024 presidential election, at a time when Donald Trump is reportedly already preparing to launch his candidacy.

It’s kind of special that you can talk about it and it’s a perfectly reasonable expectation. But so it is. The GOP seems completely united around Trump. The Democratic Party is not so united around Biden. He campaigned, he supported the campaign relatively discreetly, not many candidates wanted his company, which is telling. But above all, Biden is turning 80, he is already old, so that can be harmful. But some past cases show that incumbent presidents who lost midterm elections won presidential and even senate elections. This is the case, for example, with Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. There are examples for everything.
