British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Tuesday the construction of five additional war frigates “in the face of the growing Russian threat,” according to a Downing Street statement.
This announcement made before the opening of the G20 summit in Bali represents a contract worth 4,200 million pounds (4,700 million euros) to the British group BAE Systems by the Royal Navy.
“The UK and its allies are taking steps to strengthen their security in the face of the growing Russian threat,” Downing Street said.
“End dependence on Russian hydrocarbons”
This Tuesday, “the President of the Government announced the new phase of the Type 26 frigate program” with five new frigates, in addition to the three that are already under construction.
The British Prime Minister plans to attend the G20 summit on the Indonesian island of Bali on Tuesday and Wednesday, where he intends to denounce the “barbarism” of Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ukraine.
“We must ensure that Vladimir Putin’s attempts to divide the international community fail,” he added according to the text. “This requires neighboring countries to end their dependence on Russian hydrocarbons.”
